On 8 October 2015 to 23 March 2016 Rear Admiral Stefano Barbieri, from the Italian Navy, as been designated EUROMARFOR Task Group Commander (COMGRUEUROMARFOR) and, in this sequence, assumed the duty of Operation Atalanta Force Force Commander.

The Atalanta’s Force Headquarters (FHQ) staff, embarked in Italian Navy warship, ITS Libeccio, was made up from 14 European Union Member States, as well as personnel from the EU’s partner nation, Djibouti. The EUROMARFOR Task Group has been composed of ITS Carabiniere (Flagship), ITS Libeccio, ESPS Victoria and SPS Meteoro.

Rear Stafano Berbieri was the COMGRUEUROMARFOR and lead the EU Naval Force at sea for approximately six months.
