The Portuguese Navy celebrates its 700th anniversary.

Considered one of the oldest navies in the world, it was born in 1317, by a Royal Decree named “Carta Régia” from the King Dom Dinis, supporting its first permanent organization.

This document, considered the Navy birth certificate, consists on an agreement between King Dom Dinis and the Genovese Manuel Pessanha, awarding him the title of Admiral of the Kingdom of Portugal.

The key moment of the commemorations took place in Terreiro do Paço, chaired by the President of the Republic and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces Dr. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

Attended the commemoration the Chief of Navy Staff Admiral António Silva Ribeiro, the Secretary of Defense Dr. Marcos Perestrello and a significant number of diplomatic and foreign military representatives.

Particularly impressive was a parade composed by 700 militaries, with the presence of several ships from different navies visible in the Tagus River.
