Spanish submarine ‘Galerna’ returns from counter-Daesh operation

A Spanish Navy submarine returned home having concluded a month-and-a-half deployment to operation ‘Active Endeavor’, an international mission to fight the ISIL terrorist organization.

Submarine ‘Galerna’ (S-71) returned to her homeport in Cartagena, Spain on May 26, 2016, after participating in the operation in the Mediterranean Sea.

This is the first Spanish OAE deployment scheduled for 2016. The submarine spent a month and a half monitoring possible illegal and terrorist activities.

Thanks to their stealth, these ships regularly take part –undetected– in this type of operations. They are equipped with modern sensors and systems which gather intelligence and transmit it in real-time via satellite, the Spanish Navy explained.

‘Galerna’ (S-71) is the first of a series of four submarines built by the former Bazán shipyards (now Navantia), commissioned in 1983.

The S-71 has participated in many national and NATO exercises and operations like ‘Sorbet Royal’, ‘Dogfish’, ‘Linked Seas’, ‘Dragon Hammer’, ‘Noble Mariner’, ‘Minex’ and ‘Tapon’.
